[ March has already been reliable to collaborate with, so she comes to mind when this particular mission brief is relayed to all Outsiders. The details didn't mention any conditions such as distributing the assigned boxes only to people who haven't received one yet or that the recipient is obligated to consume the chocolate — that should make the task reasonably straightforward to complete. ]

Greetings, March. I imagine that you've made arrangements to fulfill the objective of the current mission?

[ Hm indeed. ]

The task involves giving others our allocated boxes of chocolate. Like the arrival questionnaire, I suppose the intent is to accelerate interactions between LILITH's recruits.

[ March has most likely met enough people to cover her remaining boxes, but Yesod decides to make his suggestion all the same. ]

I see. In that case, if the rest have no planned recipients yet, would you like to exchange a box each?

[ Unexciting...? Unfortunately, he's caught off-guard enough for his thoughts to slip through, too. ]

What would be considered "exciting" phrasing in this context?

As I suggested it, I'll make my way to your location or the nearest suitable option.

Perhaps I should have incorporated the word "playmate"...

[ Of course not, and perhaps he should stop thinking for now. Thanks, James. ]

I'll arrive soon, then.

[ And arrive he does, box in hand, stopping in front of March's quarters. There, keeping the box carefully balanced, he knocks on the sliding door before drawing back a step to wait. ]

[ She must have been waiting at the ready, prepared to make her example as convincing a demonstration as her efforts as "April May"... Once more, it catches him somewhat off-guard, though being teased for his demeanor isn't entirely unfamiliar, and he supposes that this is not unlike that.

He holds his box proffered nonetheless, simultaneously extending his free hand for March's box. ]

...While I am not a pretty girl, the sentiment is in fact mutual.

[ But combining it with acting in response to LILITH's coercion isn't how he would prefer to express appreciation and the like. ]

However, your example suits you, whereas I doubt that any attempt on my part to emulate it would have the same effect.

The assignment itself is not the issue.

[ As March moves aside, Yesod takes the cue to step forward and into the room to allow her to close the door, rather than continue the conversation in the doorway. He shakes his head, both hands holding March's box of chocolate steady now. ]

Or rather, if it isn't perceived as nothing more than persuading others to accept these boxes in order to avoid punishment, it won't become an issue.

[ If the task is a bonding exercise, wouldn't the results be more meaningful without the involvement of any threat or incentive? ]

[ Once inside, Yesod lets his gaze travel around the room briefly to take in its interior, noting the wall of photographs. March has evidently made a considerable number of friends here, including Malkuth. Then her thanking him, calling him a friend of hers, might have been sincere...

He's quiet for a moment, sifting through his views on the topic at hand. This isn't Lobotomy Corporation, and ultimately, his measures made no difference.

Finally, he shakes his head a second time. ]

I can only speak for myself, of course, and I am not opposed to the rationale behind it. I simply dislike the notion of using others to meet some sort of quota.

[ Even if these are just boxes of chocolate, and in theory, they can come to represent anything, as March has demonstrated. ]

Wouldn't you prefer to befriend people who approach you on their own terms?

It's clear that there is no ulterior motive behind it, in your case. Consequently, the people you approach probably appreciate your doing so.

[ Particularly in this instance. Outside of that, March only seems eager to turn her acquaintances and friends into custom wallpaper to decorate her room, which is perfectly harmless. Yesod glances at that wall again, the photos there, before turning back to March. ]

...I believe that also extends to Malkuth.

[ Based on Malkuth's own remarks, at least, when she spoke of making friends here — or more specifically, wanting to call those people her friends. Perhaps even Netzach would respond to March's proactive approach. ]

[ March is truly powerful... At that, Yesod gives her a questioning look. ]

Regarding Malkuth?

[ That would be odd, he thinks, unless it's something that requires a second opinion, in March's view. ]

[ That alone already seems to be more than "a little" about their time in Lobotomy Corporation, and March surprises him yet again. It isn't her apparent concern, though Malkuth must have told her enough to give her a distinct idea of their sins across their lives — whether or not she considers people her friends, she appears to be a kindhearted person. Rather, it's the tone of her voice, the shift in her manner to handle this change of subject with care. The admission that broaching it was on her mind.

He isn't sure how to answer, he realizes. He might have dismissed it, in the past — both distant and less so — intent on locking away every unacceptable thought and emotion, forcing them into containment to prevent the consequences of their breaching those walls. He recognizes that as a mistake.

(Sometimes, he still doesn't know what he will see, whenever he looks at himself.)

Another moment passes in silence, too much of it. Yesod thinks of his conversation with Malkuth, the exchange with Ishmael. They did taste hope, and there may be things left to believe in after all.

And if Malkuth was able to recount pieces of their story and entrust them to March, the two of them have grown close. It's natural to want that, to feel less alone. ]

...Then you're aware that Malkuth, Netzach, and I all recall different points in time? What did Malkuth mention about our memories?

[ The summary glosses over the necessity of achieving their project's goal and the extent to which everything fell apart back then, perhaps because March wants to avoid upsetting him or because Malkuth herself found it difficult to revisit these topics. Enoch, Carmen. The Cogito experiments commencing in earnest. The price paid for seeming progress. Those endless days in Lobotomy Corporation, too.

Remembering provided an explanation for the defects that they exhibited — or the absurd design flaws — if they were AIs created to carry out their work. Even suspended in this strange state between recollections of being human and an ongoing existence as a machine, it's better to know the truth of the past and the future.

With a nod, Yesod gestures at himself. ]

Yes. This projected appearance resembles my first incarnation, but my current mechanical body isn't humanoid. The same is the case for Netzach. Yet according to Malkuth, we have human bodies again in the future, as she does.

[ As Angela implied in her negotiations. ]

I've wondered what LILITH's reasoning could be. As it is, it seems that Malkuth feels the need to protect us. [ Which remains worrying, frankly. ] In any case, truthfully, neither she nor I know precisely what Netzach's memories might contain, should he eventually recall them here.

[ That is, their past selves were possibly spared even greater pain as more and more went downhill, if only because they were dead. He can't predict how Netzach would react to recovering Giovanni's memories in different circumstances instead of the breaking point that they all reached, let alone learning of future events that he hasn't experienced himself. ]

...We don't intend to abandon Netzach, whether or not he gains full awareness of our situation.

[ Though they must seem slightly different to Netzach, oddly so, compared to what he remembers of his fellow Sephirot. It's best to approach the matter carefully — at the facility, the circumstances were dire, and ideally, Netzach won't undergo what he did then.

Then, pausing, Yesod considers March's request. She might have more questions for him, for all of them, if he grants it, but he sees no reason to withhold this from her. ]

Malkuth has told me that my human appearance hasn't changed significantly. Hers hasn't, either... I suppose her hair is longer than it was in her first life.

[ Are their bodies within the Library based on Carmen's memories, adjusted, or their own? A combination? ]

As for my present form...

[ Deactivating the cloaking device reveals it to leave him peering up at March with his single glowing eye. The cloaking device's functions, he notes, likely correct the sound of his voice and Netzach's to compensate for the fact that their mechanical bodies don't include a larynx. ]
